I will make you and the woman
enemies to each other.
Your children and her children
will be enemies.
You will bite her child’s foot,
but he will crush your head.”
\{God says,\} “Why do you continue giving me all these sacrifices? {\cf2\super [7]} I have had enough of your sacrifices of goats and fat from bulls, sheep, and goats.
\{All the trees in\} Lebanon are not enough\par to burn for the Lord.\par And all the animals in Lebanon\par are not enough to kill \{for a sacrifice\}.\par
\{The Lord says,\}\par “Why do you bring me incense {\cf2\super [43]} \par from the country of Sheba? {\cf2\super [44]} \par Why do you bring me sweet-smelling cane from a far away country?\par Your burnt offerings don’t make\par me happy.\par Your sacrifices don’t please me.”\par
The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit {\cf2\super [15]} will come to you and the power of the Most High (God) will cover you. The baby will be holy. He will be called the Son of God.
The Word {\cf2\super [5]} became a man and lived among us. We saw his glory—the glory that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace (kindness) and truth.
Jesus Christ did the things God wanted him to do. And because of that, we are made holy through the sacrifice {\cf2\super [126]} of Christ’s body. Christ made that sacrifice one time—enough for all time.
Then I said, ‘Here I am, God.\par It is written about me in the book\par of the law.\par I have come to do the things you want.’”\par \i (Psalm 40:6-8)\i0 \par
\{In this Scripture {\cf2\super [123]} \} he (Christ) first said, “You don’t want sacrifices {\cf2\super [124]} and offerings. You are not pleased with animals killed and burned or with sacrifices to take away sin.” (These are all sacrifices that the law {\cf2\super [125]} commands.)
Those children are people with physical bodies. So Jesus himself became like those people and had the same experiences people have. Jesus did this so that, by dying, he could destroy the one who has the power of death. That one is the devil.
While Christ lived on earth he prayed to God and asked God for help. God is the One who could save him from death, and Jesus prayed to God with loud cries and tears. And God answered Jesus’ prayers because Jesus was humble and did everything God wanted.
Every high priest {\cf2\super [80]} has the work of offering gifts and sacrifices {\cf2\super [81]} to God. So our high priest must also offer something to God.
Christ carried our sins in his body on the cross. He did this so that we would stop living for sin and live for what is right. By his (Christ’s) wounds you were healed.
