So Abram moved his tents. He went to live near Mamre’s big trees. This was near the city of Hebron. At that place Abram built an altar [78] for worshiping the Lord.
Then the man said, “Your name will not be Jacob. Your name will now be Israel. [191] I give you this name because you have fought with God and with men, and you have not been defeated.”
Jacob built an altar [205] there. Jacob named the place “El Bethel.” Jacob chose this name because that is the place God first appeared to him when he was running from his brother.
Then Noah built an altar [55] to the Lord. Noah took some of all the clean birds and some of all the clean animals, [56] and Noah burned them on the altar as a gift to God.
