I would like to buy the cave of Machpelah. Ephron owns this. It is at the end of his field. I will pay him the full price—all that it is worth. I want all of you to be witnesses that I am buying it as a burial place.”

Ephron was sitting there among the people. Ephron answered Abraham,

“I am only a traveler staying in your country. I have no place to bury my wife. Please give me some land so I can bury my wife.”

Abraham said to them, “If you truly want to help me bury my dead wife, then speak to Ephron the son of Zohar for me.

This is the same cave that Abraham bought from the Hittite people. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.

Then Israel gave them a command. He said, “When I die, I want to be with my people. I want to be buried with my ancestors [261] in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite.

They carried his body to Canaan and buried it in the cave at Machpelah. This was the cave near Mamre in the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite. Abraham bought that cave to use as a burial place.

David said to Araunah, “Sell me your threshing floor. {\cf2\super [220]} I will pay you the full price. Then I can use the area to build an altar {\cf2\super [221]} to worship the Lord. Then the terrible sicknesses will be stopped.”

But King David answered Araunah, “No, I will pay you the full price. I won’t take anything that is yours and give it to the Lord. I won’t give offerings that cost me nothing.”

If someone does wrong to you, don’t pay him back by doing wrong to him. Try to do the things that all people think are good.

Don’t owe people anything. But you will always owe love to each other. The person that loves other people has obeyed all the law. {\cf2\super [135]}
