Ezekiel 20:3

“Son of man, {\cf2\super [139]} speak to the elders (leaders) of Israel. Tell them ‘The Lord my Master says these things: Have you men come to ask me advice? If you have, then I won’t give it to you. The Lord my Master said these things.’

The Lord hates the offerings that evil people give. But the Lord is happy to hear a good person’s prayers.

The Lord is not happy when evil people offer him sacrifices, especially when those evil people are trying to get something from him.

If a person refuses to listen to \{God’s\} teachings, then \{God\} will refuse to hear his prayers.

“When you people come to meet with me, you trample (walk on) everything in my yard. Who told you to do this?

“You people will raise your arms to pray to me—but I will refuse to look at you. You people will say more and more prayers—but I will refuse to listen to you. Why? Because your hands are covered with blood.

Then they will come every day\par to worship me.\par And they will want to learn my ways.\par They will become a nation that lives right.\par They will not quit following\par God’s good commands.\par They will ask me to judge them fairly.\par They will want to go to God\par \{for his fair decisions\}.\par

Some of the elders of Israel came to me. They sat down to talk with me.

Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said,

You are giving the same kind of gifts. You are putting your children in the fire \{as a gift to your false gods\}. You are still making yourself filthy with those filthy idols today! Do you really think that I should let you come to me and ask me for advice? I am the Lord and Master. By my life I promise, I won’t answer your questions and give you advice!

“‘And now, about you, Son of man. {\cf2\super [273]} Your people lean against the walls and stand in their doorways talking about you. They tell each other, “Come on, let’s go hear what the Lord says.”

The people will wander around the country,\par from the Dead Sea\par to the Mediterranean Sea,\par and from the north part of the country,\par to the east.\par The people will go back and forth\par looking for a message from the Lord.\par But they will not find it.\par

The seers {\cf2\super [39]} are ashamed.\par The fortune tellers {\cf2\super [40]} are embarrassed.\par They won’t say anything\par because God will not speak to them!\par

Many Pharisees {\cf2\super [37]} and Sadducees {\cf2\super [38]} came to the place where John was baptizing people. When John saw them he said to them: “You are all snakes! Who warned you to run away from God’s anger that is coming?

People came to be baptized {\cf2\super [48]} by John. John said to them, “You are like poisonous snakes! Who warned you to run away from God’s anger that is coming?

God is spirit. So the people that worship God must worship in spirit and truth.”

Saul prayed to the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him. God did not talk to Saul in dreams. God did not use the Urim [208] to give him an answer. And God did not use prophets to speak to Saul.
