“Now, that evil son might also have a son. But this son might see the bad things his father did, and he might refuse to live like his father. That good son treats people fairly.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to rule. He ruled 31 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

Josiah did the things that the Lord said were right. Josiah followed God like his ancestor [268] David. Josiah obeyed God’s teachings—he did exactly what God wanted.

The king said, “Go, ask the Lord for me, and for the people that are left in Israel and in Judah. Ask about the words in the book that was found. The Lord is very angry with us because our ancestors {\cf2\super [430]} did not obey the Lord’s word. They did not do all the things this book says to do!”

A father with a foolish son will be very sad. A fool’s father won’t be happy.

The father of a good person is very happy. If a person has a wise child, then that child brings joy.

Those people have not thought about these things. The people don’t understand, so they have never thought to themselves, “I burned half of the wood in the fire. I used the hot coals to bake my bread and cook my meat. Then I ate the meat. And I used the wood that was left to make this terrible thing. I am worshiping a block of wood!”

We promised to make sacrifices to the Queen of Heaven. {\cf2\super [357]} And we will do everything we promised. We will offer sacrifices and pour out drink offerings in worship to her. We did that in the past. And our ancestors, our kings, and our officials did that in the past. All of us did those things in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At the time we worshiped the Queen of Heaven, we had plenty of food. We were successful. Nothing bad happened to us.

I have listened to them very carefully.\par But they don’t say what is right.\par The people are not sorry for their sins.\par The people don’t think about the bad things they have done.\par The people do things without thinking.\par They are like horses running into a battle.\par

The people of Judah lived their own way.\par They were stubborn.\par They followed the false god Baal. {\cf2\super [76]} \par Their fathers taught them to follow\par those false gods.”\par

“But that good person might have a son that does not do any of those good things. The son might steal things and kill people.

That good son does not go to the mountains and share in foods offered to false gods. He does not pray to those filthy idols in Israel. He does not do the sin of adultery with his neighbor’s wife.

That person saw how bad he was and came back to me. He stopped doing the bad things he did in the past. So he will live! He won’t die!”

I spoke to their children. I told them, “Don’t be like your parents. Don’t make yourself filthy with their filthy idols. Don’t follow their laws. Don’t obey their commands.

Those people don’t believe\par that I will remember their crimes.\par The bad things they did are all around.\par I can see their sins clearly.\par

Now, the Lord All-Powerful says, ‘Think about what is happening!

The Lord All-Powerful says, “Think about what you are doing!

\{The Lord said,\} “Today is the 24th day of the ninth month. You have finished laying the foundation of the Lord’s temple. So notice what happens from this day forward!

And you will finish the sin that your fathers started!

You know that \{in the past\} you were living in a worthless way. You got that way of living from the people who lived before you. But you were saved from that way of living. You were bought, but not with things that ruin like gold or silver.
