But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord? Why should I obey him? Why should I let Israel go? I don’t even know who this Lord is, so I refuse to let Israel go.”

Did any of the gods in the other countries save their land from me? No! Can the Lord save Jerusalem from me? No!”

My ancestors destroyed those countries. There is no god that can stop me from destroying his people. So you think your god can save you from me?

Do not let Hezekiah fool you or trick you. Don’t believe him because no god of any nation or kingdom has ever been able to keep his people safe from me or my ancestors. So don’t think your god can stop me from destroying you.’”

Those officers said bad things against the gods the people of the world worshiped. Those gods are only things people made with their hands. In the same way, those officers said the same bad things against the God of Jerusalem.

You showed the miracles to Pharaoh.\par You did amazing things to his officials and his people.\par You knew that the Egyptians thought\par they were better than our ancestors.\par But you proved how great you are!\par And they remember that even today!\par

Why? Because the evil person refuses to obey God—\par He shakes his fist at God,\par and tries to defeat God All-Powerful.\par

That evil person is very stubborn.\par He tries to attack God with a thick,\par strong shield.\par

And the evil people say,\par ‘Who is God All-Powerful?\par We don’t need to serve him!\par It won’t help to pray to him!’\par

Bad people are too proud to follow God.\par They make all their evil plans.\par And they act like there is no God.\par

Those people say,\par “We will say the right lies\par and become very important.\par We know what to say,\par so that no one will be our master.”\par

But the Lord says:\par “Bad people stole from the poor people.\par They took things from helpless people.\par But now I will stand and defend those weary (tired) people.”\par

A foolish person {\cf2\super [75]} says in his heart,\par “There is no God.”\par Foolish people do terrible, rotten things.\par Not even one of them does good.\par

“But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go. Only a great power will force him to let you go.

So the Lord says that he will do something to show you that he is the Lord. I will hit the water of the Nile River with this walking stick in my hand, and the river will change into blood.

If I have more than I need, then I will think I don’t need you. But if I am poor then I might steal. Then I will bring shame to the name of God.

But you might say, ‘We will not stay in Judah.’ If you say that, you will disobey the Lord your God.

“Moab thought he was more important\par than the Lord.\par So punish Moab until he staggers\par like a drunk person.\par Moab will fall and roll around in his vomit.\par People will make fun of Moab.\par

Now, when you hear the sound of the horns, flutes, lyres, {\cf2\super [32]} sambucas, {\cf2\super [33]} harps, bagpipes, {\cf2\super [34]} and all the other musical instruments, you must bow down and worship the gold idol. If you are ready to worship the idol I have made, that will be good. But if you don’t worship it, you will be thrown very quickly into the hot furnace. Then no god will be able to save you from my power!”

People will do these things because they have not known the Father, and they have not known me.

People did not think it was important to have a true knowledge of God. So God left them and allowed those people to have their own worthless thinking. And so those people do the things that they should not do.

He will come from heaven with burning fire to punish those people who don’t know God. He will punish those people who refuse to accept the Good News {\cf2\super [1]} about our Lord Jesus Christ.

After that whole generation died, the next generation grew up. This new generation did not know about the Lord and what the Lord had done for the people of Israel.

Eli’s sons were bad men. They did not care about the Lord.

But Nabal {was mean to them}. Nabal said, “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse? There are many slaves that have run away from their masters these days!
