Jethro saw Moses judging the people. He asked, “Why are you doing this? Why are you the only judge? And why do people come to you all day?”

Absalom got up early and stood near the gate. [81] Absalom watched for any person with problems who was going to King David for judgment. Then Absalom would talk to that person. Absalom would say, “What city are you from?” The man would answer, “I am from such and such family group in Israel.”

The next day, Moses had the special job of judging the people. {There were very many people,} so the people had to stand before Moses all day.

Then Moses said to his father-in-law, “The people come to me and ask me to ask for God’s decision to their problem.

These rulers were judges for the people. The people could always bring their arguments to these rulers. And Moses had to decide only the most important cases.

They kept the man there because they did not know how they should punish him.

The Kenite people left the City of Palm Trees (Jericho) and went with the men of Judah. Those people went to the Desert of Judah to live with the people there. This was in the Negev [8] near the city Arad. (The Kenite people were from the family of Moses’ father-in-law.)
