Esther 4:1

Mordecai heard about all that had been done. When he heard about the king’s commands against the Jews, he tore his clothes. Then he put on clothes of sadness and put ashes on his head. Then he went out into the city crying loudly.

Esau heard his father’s words. He became very angry and bitter. He cried out. He said to his father, “Then bless me also, father!”

Jacob was so sorry about his son that he tore his clothes. Then Jacob put on special clothes to show that he was sad. Jacob continued to be sad about his son for a long time.

Then David tore his clothes to show he was very sad. All the men with David did the same thing.

Tamar tore her robe of many colors and put ashes on her head. Then she put her hand on her head and began crying. [75]

But Mordecai went only as far as the king’s gate. No one was allowed to enter that gate dressed in clothes of sadness.

In every province where the king’s command had come, there was much crying and sadness among the Jews. They were fasting {\cf2\super [13]} and crying loudly. Many Jews were lying on the ground dressed in clothes of sadness with ashes on their heads.

When Job heard this, he tore his clothes and shaved his head \{to show he was sad and upset\}. Then Job fell on the ground and worshiped God.

So Job sat near the garbage piles. He used a piece of broken pottery to scrape his sores.

And Lord, I am ashamed of myself.\par Lord, I am so sorry.\par As I sit in the dust and ashes, {\cf2\super [107]} \par I promise to change my heart\par and my life.”\par

People in the cities Heshbon and Elealeh\par are crying very loudly.\par You can hear their voices far away\par in the city Jahaz.\par Even the soldiers are scared.\par The soldiers are shaking from fear.\par

So I say,\par “Don’t look at me!\par Let me cry!\par Don’t rush to comfort me about\par the destruction of Jerusalem.”\par

King Hezekiah listened to those things. Then Hezekiah tore his clothes \{to show he was upset\}. Then Hezekiah put on the special clothes of sadness and went to the Lord’s temple. {\cf2\super [346]}

Hezekiah sent Eliakim the palace manager, Shebna the royal secretary, and the elders (leaders) of the priests {\cf2\super [347]} to the prophet, Isaiah son of Amoz. They wore the special clothes \{that showed they were sad and upset\}.

Do you think on those special days for not eating food that all I want is to see people punish their bodies? Do you think I want people to look sad? Do you think I want people to bow their heads like dead plants and wear clothes of sadness? Do you think I want people to sit in ashes to show their sadness? That is what you do on your special days for not eating food. Do you think that is what the Lord wants?

So the sword has been polished.\par Now it can be used.\par The sword was sharpened and polished.\par Now it can be put in the hand of the killer.\par

\{God said to me,\} “Son of man, {\cf2\super [156]} make sad sounds like a sad person with a broken heart. Make these sad sounds in front of the people.

Then I turned to God, my Master. I prayed to him and asked him for help. I did not eat any food, and I put on the clothes that showed I was sad. And I put dirt on my head.

I will be very sad about what will happen.\par I will go without shoes and clothes.\par I will cry like a dog. {\cf2\super [11]} \par I will mourn like a bird. {\cf2\super [12]} \par

The Lord’s special day for judging is coming soon! That day is near and coming fast. People will hear very sad sounds on the Lord’s special day of judgment. Even strong soldiers will cry!

Jesus said, “It will be bad for you Chorazin. {\cf2\super [145]} It will be bad for you Bethsaida. {\cf2\super [146]} I did many miracles in you. If those same miracles had happened in Tyre and Sidon, {\cf2\super [147]} then those people in Tyre and Sidon would have changed their lives a long time ago. Those people would have worn sackcloth {\cf2\super [148]} and put ashes on themselves to show that they were sorry for their sins.

But when the apostles, {\cf2\super [288]} Barnabas and Paul, understood what the people were doing, they tore their own clothes. {\cf2\super [289]} Then they ran in among the people and shouted to them:

When Joshua heard about this, he tore his clothes {to show his sadness}. He bowed down on the ground before the Holy Box. [33] Joshua stayed there until evening. The leaders of Israel did the same thing. They also threw dirt on their heads {to show their sadness}.
