Deuteronomy 21:23

Easy To Read Version

You must not let that body stay on the tree all night. You must be sure to bury this man on the same day. Why? Because the person that hangs on a tree is cursed by God. You must not ruin the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took the cloth of sadness and put it on the rock. [123] That cloth stayed on the rock from the time the harvest began until the rains came. Rizpah watched the bodies day and night. She did not let the wild birds get the bodies during the day. And she did not let the wild animals get them at night.

Give us seven of Saul’s sons. Saul was the Lord’s chosen king. So we will hang his sons in front of the Lord on Mount Gibeah of Saul.”

The messenger came to Jehu and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons!”

It will take seven months for the family of Israel to bury them. They must do this to make the land pure.

They made the land filthy [332] ! Now the land {is sick of those things}! And the land is vomiting out the people who lived there!

The Lord said to Moses, “Get all the leaders of these people. Then kill them so that all the people can see. [311] Lay their bodies before the Lord. Then the Lord will not show his anger against all the people of Israel.”

This day was Preparation day. {\cf2\super [252]} The next day was a special Sabbath day. {\cf2\super [253]} The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to stay on the cross on the Sabbath day. So they asked Pilate to order that the legs of the men be broken \{to make them die sooner\}. And they asked that the bodies of the men be taken down from the crosses.

They are my brothers and sisters, my earthly family. I wish I could help them. I would even have a curse on me and cut myself off from Christ if that would help them.

If any person does not love the Lord, then let that person be separated from God—lost forever!

The law put a curse on us. But Christ took away that curse. He changed places with us. Christ put himself under that curse. The Scriptures say, “When a person’s body is put (hung) on a tree, {\cf2\super [32]} that person is under a curse.” {\cf2\super [33]}

“You might be gathering your harvest in the field, and you might forget and leave some grain there. You must not go back to get it. It will be for the foreigners, the orphans, [154] and the widows. [155] If you leave some grain for them, then the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.

“The Lord became angry at me because of you. The Lord swore (promised) that I could not go across the Jordan River. He told me that I could not go into the good land that the Lord your God is giving you.

And you must not bring any of those terrible idols into your homes. You must hate those terrible things! You must destroy those idols!

That is why the army of Israel turned and ran away from the fight. They did that because they have done wrong. They should be destroyed. I will not continue to help you. I will not continue to be with you unless you destroy everything I commanded you to destroy.

Joshua hanged the king of Ai on a tree. He left him hanging on the tree until evening. At sunset, Joshua told his men to take the king’s body down from the tree. They threw his body down at the city gate. Then they covered the body with many rocks. That pile of rocks is still there today.
