Deuteronomy 16:3

Easy To Read Version

Don’t eat bread that has yeast in it with this sacrifice. You must eat unleavened bread [99] for seven days. This bread is called ‘Bread of Trouble.’ It will help you remember the troubles you had in Egypt. Remember how quickly you had to leave that country! You must remember that day as long as you live.

God does amazing things\par so that we will remember\par that the Lord is kind and merciful.\par

It is a waste of time\par to get up early and stay up late,\par trying to make a living.\par God cares for the people he loves,\par even while they are sleeping.\par

“When you eat the meal, you must be fully dressed like you are going on a journey. You must have your shoes on your feet and your walking stick in your hand. You must eat in a hurry. Why? Because this is the Lord’s Passover [64] —{the time when the Lord protected his people and led them quickly out of Egypt}.

You must remember the Festival of Unleavened Bread. [68] Why? Because on this day I took all of your people out of Egypt in groups. [69] So, all of your descendants [70] must remember this day. This is a law that will last forever.

The people did not have time to put yeast in their bread. And they did not make any special food for their journey. So they had to bake their bread without yeast.

“On this night, you must roast the lamb and eat all of the meat. You must also eat bitter herbs and bread made without yeast.

“Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat that bread made without yeast like I commanded you before. Do this during the month I have chosen, the month of Abib. [346] Why? Because that is the month you came out of Egypt.

You will leave Babylon.\par But they will not force you to leave\par in a hurry.\par You will not be forced to run away.\par You will walk out,\par \{and the Lord will walk with you\}.\par The Lord will be in front of you,\par and the God of Israel will be behind you. {\cf2\super [426]} \par

“The Festival of Unleavened Bread [398] is on the 15th day of the same month (Nisan). You will eat unleavened bread for seven days.

The Festival of Unleavened Bread begins on the 15th day of that month. This holiday lasts for seven days. The only bread you can eat is bread made without yeast.

That person will still be able to celebrate Passover {at another time}. That person must celebrate Passover at twilight [144] on the 14th day of the second month. At that time, he must eat the lamb, the bread made without yeast, and the bitter herbs.

Then Jesus took some bread. He thanked God for the bread and divided it. He gave it to the apostles. {\cf2\super [349]} Then Jesus said, “This bread is my body that I am giving for you. Eat this to remember me.”

So let us eat our Passover meal, but not with the bread that has the old yeast. That old yeast is the yeast of sin and wrong doing. But let us eat the bread that has no yeast. This is the bread of goodness and truth.

You must go to the place the Lord will choose to be his special house. There you must offer the Passover sacrifice to honor the Lord. You must offer the cows and goats.

But you must be careful! Be sure that as long as you live you never forget the things you have seen. You must teach those things to your children and grandchildren.

And you became like us and like the Lord. You suffered much, but still you accepted the teaching with joy. The Holy Spirit gave you that joy.

You will tell the children that the Lord stopped the water from flowing in the Jordan River. When the Holy Box of the Lord’s Agreement crossed the river, the water stopped flowing. Those rocks will help the people of Israel remember this thing forever.”
