Daniel 9:2

Easy To Read Version

During the first year that Darius was king, I, Daniel, was reading some books. In the books, I saw that the Lord told Jeremiah how many years would pass before Jerusalem would be built again. The Lord said 70 years would pass.

And so the things the Lord told the people of Israel through the prophet Jeremiah really happened. The Lord had said through Jeremiah: “This place will be an empty wasteland for 70 years. {\cf2\super [456]} This will happen to make up for the Sabbath rests {\cf2\super [457]} that the people didn’t do.”

During the first year {\cf2\super [1]} that Cyrus was king of Persia, the Lord encouraged Cyrus to make an announcement. Cyrus put that announcement in writing and had it read every place in his kingdom. This happened so that the Lord’s message that was spoken through Jeremiah {\cf2\super [2]} would truly happen. This is the announcement:

Your Agreement is my best friend.\par It gives me good advice.\par

Your holy cities are empty.\par Those cities are like deserts now.\par Zion {\cf2\super [465]} is a desert!\par Jerusalem is destroyed!\par

These are the messages of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was the son of a man named Hilkiah. Jeremiah belonged to the family of priests that lived in the city of Anathoth. {\cf2\super [1]} That city is in the land that belongs to the family group of Benjamin.

I poured this wine for the people of Jerusalem and Judah. I made the kings and leaders of Judah drink from the cup. I did this so that they would become an empty desert. I did this so that place would be destroyed so badly that people would whistle about it and say curses about that place. And it happened—Judah is like that now!

They said, “Micah the prophet was from the city of Moresheth. Micah was a prophet during the time that Hezekiah was king of Judah. Micah said these things to all the people of Judah:

If you don’t obey me, then I will make my temple in Jerusalem just like my Holy Tent at Shiloh. {\cf2\super [206]} People all over the world will think of Jerusalem when they ask for bad things to happen to other cities.’”

All nations will serve Nebuchadnezzar and his son and his grandson. Then the time will come for Babylon to be defeated. Many nations and great kings will make Babylon their servant.

This is what the Lord says: “Babylon will be powerful for 70 years. After that time, I will come to you people that are living in Babylon. I will keep my good promise to bring you back to Jerusalem.

Jerusalem once was a city full of people.\par But now the city is so deserted!\par Jerusalem was one of the greatest cities\par in the world.\par But now she {\cf2\super [1]} has become like a widow.\par She was once a princess among cities.\par But now she has been made a slave.\par

No person or animal will pass through Egypt. Nothing will pass through or settle there for 40 years.

Then I turned to God, my Master. I prayed to him and asked him for help. I did not eat any food, and I put on the clothes that showed I was sad. And I put dirt on my head.

\{Leaders,\} because of you,\par Zion {\cf2\super [45]} will be destroyed.\par It will become a plowed field.\par Jerusalem will become a pile of rocks.\par Temple Mount will be an empty hill {\cf2\super [46]} overgrown with bushes.\par

Then the Lord’s angel said, “Lord, how long before you comfort Jerusalem and the cities of Judah? You have shown your anger at these cities for 70 years now.”

“Tell the priests and the other people in this country these things: For seventy years you fasted and showed your sadness in the fifth month and in the seventh month. But was that fasting really for me? No!

“Daniel the prophet {\cf2\super [368]} spoke about ‘the terrible thing that causes destruction.’ {\cf2\super [369]} You will see this terrible thing standing in the holy place (the temple).” (You that read this should understand what it means.)

“You will see ‘the terrible thing that causes destruction.’ {\cf2\super [185]} You will see this thing standing in the place where it should not be.” (You that read this should understand what it means.) “At that time, the people in Judea should run away to the mountains.

The officer said to Philip, “Please, tell me, who is the prophet {\cf2\super [178]} talking about? Is he talking about himself or about someone else?”

Continue to read the Scriptures {\cf2\super [18]} to the people, strengthen them, and teach them. Do those things until I come.

The person that reads the words of this message from God is blessed (happy). And the people who hear this message and do the things that are written in it are blessed. There is not much time left.
