Shalmaneser king of Assyria came to fight against Hoshea. {Shalmaneser defeated Hoshea} and Hoshea became his servant. So Hoshea paid tribute [198] to Shalmaneser.

David also defeated the people of Moab. At that time he forced them to lie on the ground. Then he used a rope to separate them into rows. Two rows of men were killed, but the whole third row was allowed to live. In that way, the people of Moab became servants of David. They paid tribute [53] to him.

Then David put groups of soldiers in Damascus, Aram. The Arameans became David’s servants and brought tribute. [56] The Lord gave victory to David in every place he went.

Pul king of Assyria came to fight against Israel. Menahem gave Pul 75,000 pounds [176] of silver. He did this so Pul would support Menahem and make Menahem’s kingdom stronger.

Menahem raised the money by making all the rich and powerful men pay taxes. Menahem taxed each man 20 ounces [177] of silver. Then Menahem gave the money to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria left, and did not stay there in Israel.

Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria came to fight against Israel. This was during the time that Pekah was king of Israel. Tiglath Pileser captured Ijon, Abel Bethmaacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, Galilee, and all the area of Naphtali. Tiglath Pileser took the people from these places as prisoners to Assyria.

Hoshea did the things the Lord said were wrong. But Hoshea was not as bad as the kings of Israel that ruled before him.

Later, Hoshea sent messengers to the king of Egypt {to ask for help}. That king’s name was So. That year, Hoshea did not pay tribute [199] to the king of Assyria like he did every other year. The king of Assyria learned that Hoshea had made plans against him. So the king of Assyria arrested Hoshea and put him in jail.

But don’t listen to Hezekiah!

The Lord was with Hezekiah. Hezekiah was successful in everything he did.

Our God, you are the great God,\par the awesome, powerful soldier!\par And you are kind and loyal!\par You keep your agreement!\par We have had many troubles.\par And our troubles are important to you!\par Bad things happened to all our people,\par and to our kings and leaders,\par and to our priests and prophets.\par Those terrible things have happened\par from the days of the king of Assyria\par until today!\par

At that time, Jacob’s (Israel’s) wealth\par will all be gone.\par Jacob will be like a man who was sick\par and became weak and thin.\par

That water will spill out of that river and flow into Judah. The water will rise to Judah’s throat—\{it will almost drown Judah\}.

So your armies will hear the noise of battle. And all your fortresses {\cf2\super [112]} will be destroyed. It will be like the time Shalman {\cf2\super [113]} destroyed Beth Arbel. At that time of war, mothers were killed with their children.

They make promises—but they are only telling lies. They don’t keep their promises! They make agreements \{with other countries. God does not like those agreements\}. The judges are like poisonous weeds growing in a plowed field.

Israel went to his ‘lovers’ among the nations.\par But I will gather the Israelites together.\par But they must suffer a little from the burden\par of that mighty king.\par

You will have broken my Agreement, so I will punish you. I will bring armies against you. You will go into your cities for safety. But I will cause diseases to spread among you. And your enemies will defeat you.
