Rehoboam did evil things because he didn’t decide in his heart to obey the Lord.

Asa took away the strange altars that were used to worship idols. Asa took away the high places, {\cf2\super [179]} and smashed the memorial stones. {\cf2\super [180]} And Asa broke down the Asherah poles. {\cf2\super [181]}

The high places {\cf2\super [191]} were not removed from Judah, but Asa’s heart was faithful to the Lord all of Asa’s life.

Jehoshaphat’s heart found pleasure in the ways of the Lord. He took away the high places, {\cf2\super [207]} and the Asherah poles {\cf2\super [208]} out of the country of Judah.

But there are some good things in your life. You removed the Asherah poles {\cf2\super [218]} from this country, and you decided in your heart to follow God.”

Jehoshaphat lived the right way like Asa his father lived. Jehoshaphat didn’t turn from following Asa’s way. Jehoshaphat did right in the Lord’s sight.

The people continued to offer sacrifices {\cf2\super [413]} at the high places, {\cf2\super [414]} but their sacrifices were only to the Lord their God.

You saw the great troubles he gave them. You saw the miracles and amazing things he did.

But even today you still don’t understand what happened. The Lord has not let you really understand what you saw and heard.

Samuel told the people of Israel, “If you are really coming back to the Lord—with all your heart—then you must throw away your foreign gods. You must throw away your idols of Ashtoreth. [83] And you must give yourselves fully to the Lord. You must serve only the Lord! Then the Lord will save you from the Philistines.”
