Because today he went down {into the valley} to offer many cows and the best sheep as {fellowship} offerings. And he invited all your other sons, the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. They are now eating and drinking with him. And they are saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

David’s friend, Hushai the Arkite, came to Absalom. Hushai said to Absalom, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”

Adonijah {is giving a big fellowship meal. He} has killed many cows and the best sheep {for a fellowship offering}. Adonijah invited all of your sons. And he invited Abiathar the priest and Joab, the commander of your army. But he did not invite your faithful son Solomon.

and said, “My lord and king, did you announce that Adonijah will be the new king after you? Have you decided that Adonijah will rule the people now?

At that place, Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet will anoint [4] him to be the new king of Israel. Blow the trumpet and announce, ‘This is the new king, Solomon!’

Zadok the priest carried the oil from the Holy Tent. Zadok poured the oil on Solomon’s head to show that he was the king. They blew the trumpet and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon!”

One day, at Zoheleth Rock near En Rogel, [2] Adonijah sacrificed some sheep, cows, and fat calves as a {fellowship offering}. Adonijah invited his brothers (the other sons of King David) and all of the officers from Judah.

Adonijah said, “You remember that at one time the kingdom was mine. All the people of Israel thought I was their king. But things changed. Now my brother is the king. The Lord chose him to be king.

These men brought out Joash. They put the crown on Joash and gave him the agreement between the king and God. [139] Then they anointed [140] him and made him the new king. They clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!”

Athaliah saw the king by the column where the king usually stood. She also saw the leaders and men playing the trumpets for the king. She saw that all the people were very happy. She heard the trumpets, and she tore her clothes {to show she was upset}. Then Athaliah shouted, “Treason! Treason!”

Then each officer quickly took his robe off and put it on the steps in front of Jehu. Then they blew the trumpet and made the announcement, “Jehu is king!”

Now, our God, we thank you,\par And we praise your glorious name!\par

The next day the people made sacrifices {\cf2\super [326]} to the Lord. They offered burnt offerings to the Lord. They offered 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, {\cf2\super [327]} 1,000 lambs, and the drink offerings that go with them. They offered many, many sacrifices for all the people of Israel.

They brought the king’s son out and put the crown on him. They gave him a copy of the Law. {\cf2\super [261]} Then they made Joash king. Jehoiada and his sons anointed {\cf2\super [262]} Joash. They said, “Let the king live a long time!”

Some of the people were walking ahead of Jesus. Other people were walking behind Jesus. The people shouted,

“Then the king sent some more servants. The king said to the servants, ‘I have already invited those people. So tell them that my feast is ready. I have killed my best bulls and calves to be eaten. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’

Samuel said to all the people, “See the man the Lord has chosen. There is no person like Saul among the people.”
