Secret things to the Lord our God: things that are manifest, to us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have spoken unwisely, and things that above measure exceeded my knowledge.

Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? Tell me if thou hast understanding.

I was the father of the poor: and the cause which I knew not, I searched out most diligently.

That search may be made in the books of the histories of thy fathers. And thou shalt find written in the records; and shalt know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to the kings and provinces, and that wars were raised therein of old time. For which cause also the city was destroyed.

And I commanded; and search hath been made. And it is found, that this city of old time hath rebelled against kings, and seditions and wars have been raised therein.

Gird up thy loins like a man. I will ask thee, and do thou tell me.

Now therefore if it seem good to the king, let him search in the king's library, which is in Babylon, whether it hath been decreed by Cyrus the king, that the house of God in Jerusalem should be built: and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

Then king Darius gave orders; and they searched in the library of the books that were laid up in Babylon,

The heaven above, and the earth beneath, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

And he hath cast them out of their land, in anger and in wrath, and in very great indignation: and hath thrown them into a strange land, as it is seen this day.

And David said to the young man that told him: How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son, are dead?

And the king said: Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? The woman answered, and said: By the health of thy soul, my lord, O king, it is neither on the left hand, nor on the right, in all these things which my lord the king hath spoken. For thy servant Joab, he commanded me, and he put all these words into the mouth of thy handmaid.

As it is not good for a man to eat much honey, so he that is a searcher of majesty, shall be overwhelmed by glory.

And I proposed in my mind to seek and search out wisely concerning all things that are done under the sun. This painful occupation hath God given to the children of men, to be exercised therein.
