Because war is managed by due ordering: and there shall be safety where there are many counsels.

Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him?

Designs are brought to nothing where there is no counsel: but where there are many counsellors, they are established.

Where there is no governor, the people shall fall: but there is safety where there is much counsel.

And they arose and came to the house of God, that is, to Silo. And they consulted God, and said: Who shall be in our army the first to go to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord answered them: Let Juda be your leader.

You are all here, O children of Israel: determine what you ought to do.

The things which thy eyes have seen, utter not hastily in a quarrel: lest afterward thou mayst not be able to make amends, when thou hast dishonoured thy friend.

Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way! And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come.

Yet so that they first went up and wept before the Lord until night, and consulted him, and said: Shall I go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin my brethren, or not? And he answered them: Go up against them, and join battle.

And when every one had seen this, they all cried out: There was never such a thing done in Israel from the day that our fathers came up out of Egypt, until this day. Give sentence, and decree in common what ought to be done.

Now then come, take my counsel and save thy life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

Perhaps thou hast taken counsel, to prepare thyself for battle. On whom dost thou trust, that thou darest to rebel?
