AND it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled.

And he said: Of strangers. Jesus said to him: Then the children are free.

But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest; for as concerning this sect, we know that it is every where contradicted.

And the fruits thereof grow up for the kings, whom thou hast set over us for our sins; and they have dominion over our bodies, and over our beasts, according to their will; and we are in great tribulation.

And others said: Let us borrow money for the king's tribute; and let us give up our fields and vineyards.

We give you also to understand concerning all the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nathinites, and ministers of the house of this God, that you have no authority to impose toll or tribute, or custom upon them.

And now be it known to the king, that if this city be built up, and the walls thereof repaired, they will not pay tribute nor toll, nor yearly revenues; and this loss will fail upon the kings.

But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said: Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites?

Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?
