And I said: I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength without cause and in vain. Therefore my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

A gradual canticle. Blessed are all they that fear the Lord: that walk in his ways.

And the Lord being angry shut up heaven, that the rain come not down, nor the earth yield her fruit: and you perish quickly from the excellent land, which the Lord will give you.

Are not these things from the Lord of hosts? for the people shall labour in a great fire: and the nations in vain, and they shall faint.

And the ground shall bring forth its increase: and the trees shall be filled with fruit.

I am afraid of you, lest perhaps I have laboured in vain among you.

I have planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase.

And now consider in your hearts, from this day and upward, before there was a stone laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord.

In the day of thy planting shall be the wild grape, and in the morning thy seed shall flourish: the harvest is taken away in the day of inheritance and shall grieve thee much.

Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.

The blast shall consume all the trees and the fruits of thy ground.

Cursed shall be the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground: the herds of thy oxen, and the flocks of thy sheep.

A fire is kindled in my wrath, and shall burn even to the lowest hell: and shall devour the earth with her increase, and shall burn the foundations of the mountains.

Because thou hast forgotten God thy saviour, and hast not remembered thy strong helper: therefore shalt thou plant good plants and shalt sow strange seed.

They have sown wheat and reaped thorns: they have received an inheritance, and it shall not profit them: you shall be ashamed of your fruits, because of the fierce wrath of the Lord.

When thou shalt till it, it shall not yield to thee its fruit: a fugitive and vagabond shalt thou be upon the earth.

And Elias went to shew himself to Achab: and there was a grievous famine in Samaria.

And I will cause all her mirth to cease, her solemnities, her new moons, her sabbaths, and all her festival times.
