And Elias the Thesbite of the inhabitants of Galaad said to Achab: As the Lord liveth, the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to the words of my mouth.
In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.
In that day thou shalt not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee thy proud boasters, and thou shalt no more be lifted up because of my holy mountain.
Thus saith the Lord God: They also that uphold Egypt shall fall, and the pride of her empire shall be brought down: from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord the God of hosts.
And he shall stretch forth his hands under him, as he that swimmeth stretcheth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down his glory with the dashing of his hands.
And I will bring the worse of the nations and they shall possess their houses: and I will make the pride of the mighty to cease and they shall possess their sanctuary.
For he shall bring down them that dwell on high: the high city he shall lay low. He shall bring it down even to the ground: he shall pull it down even to the dust.
Because the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and highminded, and upon every one that is arrogant: and he shall be humbled.
And the people returned to the camp: and the ancients of Israel said: Why hath the Lord defeated us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch unto us the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Silo: and let it come in the midst of us, that it may save us from the hand of our enemies.
If heaven shall be shut up, and there shall be no rain, because of their sins, and they praying in this place, shall do penance to thy name, and shall be converted from their sins, by occasion of their afflictions:
WOE to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower, the glory of his joy, who were on the head of the fat valley, staggering with wine.
Speak to the house of Israel: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the glory of your realm and the thing that your eyes desire, and for which your soul feareth: your sons, and your daughters, whom you have left, shall fall by the sword.
And the Lord being angry shut up heaven, that the rain come not down, nor the earth yield her fruit: and you perish quickly from the excellent land, which the Lord will give you.
And I will make the land a wilderness, and a desert, and the proud strength thereof shall fail, and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, because there is none to pass by them.
