Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow.

For the sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation; but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

And standing behind at his feet, she began to wash his feet, with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Now when Esdras was thus praying, and beseeching, and weeping, and lying before the temple of God, there was gathered to him of Israel an exceeding great assembly of men and women and children: and the people wept with much lamentation.

And they gathered together to Masphath. And they drew water, and poured it out before the Lord; and they fasted on that day, and they said there: We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Masphath.

Wherefore I would not destroy them from before your face: that you may have enemies, and their gods may be your ruin.

And the name of that place was called, The place of weepers, or of tears: and there they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

The messengers therefore came to Gabaa of Saul: and they spoke these words in the hearing of the people. And all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

Now therefore saith the Lord: Be converted to me with all your heart, in fasting, and in weeping, and in mourning.
