My face is swollen with weeping; and my eyelids are dim.

And shouldst know that I have done no wicked thing, whereas there is no man that can deliver out of thy hand.

For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight.

Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of: and I shall be weary of my life.

I was clad with justice: and I clothed myself with my judgment, as with a robe and a diadem.

And thou hast said: I am without sin and am innocent: and therefore let thy anger be turned away from me. Behold, I will contend with thee in judgement, because thou hast said: I have not sinned.

The just shall be astonished at this: and the innocent shall be raised up against the hypocrite.

How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my crimes and offences.

If I shall be judged, I know that I shall be found just.

I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.

If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.

For he shall crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.

Why dost thou not remove my sin, and why dost thou not take away my iniquity? Behold, now I shall sleep in the dust: and if thou seek me in the morning I shall not be.

If I have sinned and thou hast spared me for an hour: why dost thou not suffer me to be clean from my iniquity?

Thou hast sealed up my offences as it were in a bag, but hast cured my iniquity.

Now thou has said in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words:

For Job hath said: I am just, and God hath overthrown my judgment.

And the just man shall hold on his way: and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.

But he knoweth my way, and has tried me as gold that passeth through the fire.

So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he seemed just to himself.

For in judging me there is a lie: my arrow is violent without any sin.

Doth thy thought seem right to thee, that thou shouldst say: I am more just than God?
