Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who are carried by my bowels, are borne up by my womb.

Give them, O Lord. What wilt thou give them? Give them a womb without children, and dry breasts.

Woe is me, my mother! Why hast thou borne me, a man of strife, a man of contention to all the earth? I have not lent on usury, neither hath any man lent to me on usury: yet all curse me.

He shall come down like rain upon the fleece; and as showers falling gently upon the earth.

Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: for who, say they, hath heard us?

Because it shut not up the doors of the womb that bore me, nor took away evils from my eyes.

Why received upon the knees? Why suckled at the breasts?

And I praised the dead rather than the living:

And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.

Who slew me not from the womb that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb an everlasting conception.

If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, and attain to a great age, and his soul make no use of the goods of his substance, and he be without burial: of this man I pronounce, that the untimely born is better than he.

He hath not seen the sun, nor known the distance of good and evil:
