I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.

And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you:

Wherefore now we call the proud people happy, for they that work wickedness are built up, and they have tempted God and are preserved.

You have wearied the Lord with your words, and you said: Wherein have we wearied him? In that you say: Every one that doth evil, is good in the sight of the Lord, and such please him: or surely where is the God of judgment?

And now what have I here, saith the Lord: for my people is taken away gratis? They that rule over them treat them unjustly, saith the Lord, and my name is continually blasphemed all the day long.

Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

lest at any time my enemy say: I have prevailed against him. They that trouble me will rejoice when I am moved:

If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.

And saying these things, they cast away out of their coasts all the idols of strange gods and served the Lord their God. And he was touched with their miseries.

For that same is the only thing wherewith he is covered, the clothing of his body: neither hath he any other to sleep in. If he cry to me, I will hear him, because I am compassionate.

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the face of the judges thereof. And if it be not he, who is it then?

They have taken their rest at noon among the stores of them who after having trodden the wine-presses suffer thirst.

They have been rebellious to the light, they have not known his ways: neither have they returned by his paths.

And he said to him: What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth to me from the earth.

Thou indeed, O Lord, art just, if I plead with thee, but yet I will speak what is just to thee: Why doth the way of the wicked prosper? Why is it well with all them that transgress and do wickedly?

Thou hast planted them, and they have taken root: they prosper and bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth and far from their reins.
