Let darkness, and the shadow of death cover it: let a mist overspread it: and let it be wrapped up in bitterness.

But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Shall I be able to bring him back any more? I shall go to him rather: but he shall not return to me.

The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, who hath not taken his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.

And O that a man might so be judged with God, as the son of man is judged with his companion!

We all die, and like waters that return no more we fall down into the earth. Neither will God have a soul to perish, but recalleth; meaning that he that is cast off should not altogether perish.

And they have not said: Where is the Lord that made us come up out of the land of Egypt? that led us through the desert, through a land uninhabited and unpassable, through a land of drought, and the image of death, through a land wherein no man walked, nor any man dwelt?

I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living. I shall behold man no more, nor the inhabitant of rest.

The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the church of the saints.

For now I should have been asleep and still; and should have rest in my sleep:

A land of misery and darkness, where the shadow of death, and no order, but everlasting horror dwelleth.

There is no darkness, and there is no shadow of death, where they may be hid who work iniquity.

Have the gates of death been opened to thee, and hast thou seen the darksome doors?

For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head: and my heart hath forsaken me.

If I wait hell is my house: and I have made my bed in darkness.

Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother's son:

the north and the sea thou hast created. Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name:

Whatsoever thy hand is able to do, do it earnestly: for neither work, nor reason, nor wisdom, nor knowledge shall be in hell, whither thou art hastening.

If a man live many years, and have rejoiced in them all, he must remember the darksome time, and the many days: which when they shall come, the things past shall be accused of vanity.
