And her gates shall lament and mourn: and she shall sit desolate on the ground.

For the affliction of the daughter of my people, I am afflicted: and made sorrowful: astonishment hath taken hold on me.

For there was the fear of death in every city; and the hand of God was exceeding heavy. The men also that did not die were afflicted with the emerods: and the cry of every city went up to heaven.

And it came to pass that as he spoke, and they heard not: so shall they cry, and I will not hear, saith the Lord of hosts.

Wherefore thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will bring in evils upon them, which they shall not be able to escape: and they shall cry to me, and I will not hearken to them.

At their presence the people shall be in grievous pains: all faces shall be made like a kettle.

The country is destroyed, the ground hath mourned: for the corn is wasted, the wine is confounded, the oil hath languished.

Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth in it shall languish with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of the air: yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be gathered together.

Our skin was burnt as an oven, by reason of the violence of the famine.

Teth. Her gates are sunk into the ground: he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more, and her prophets have found no vision from the Lord.

Let a cry be heard out of their houses: for thou shalt bring the robber upon them suddenly, because they have digged a pit to take me and have hid snares for my feet.

How long shall the land mourn and the herb of every field wither for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? The beasts and the birds are consumed: because they have said: He shall not see our last end.

The Lord lifteth up all that fall: and setteth up all that are cast down.

There shall be a crying for wine in the streets: all mirth is forsaken: the joy of the earth is gone away.

They have laid it waste, and it hath mourned for me. With desolation is all the land made desolate, because there is none that considereth in the heart.

The nations have heard of thy disgrace and thy howling hath filled the land: for the strong hath stumbled against the strong, and both are fallen together.

Heth. The Lord hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Sion: he hath stretched out his line and hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: and the bulwark hath mourned, and the wall hath been destroyed together.

And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the wine, and upon the oil, and upon all that the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon beasts, and upon all the labour of the hands.

The husbandmen are ashamed, the vinedressers have howled for the wheat, and for the barley, because the harvest of the field is perished.

Sanctify ye a fast, call an assembly; gather together the ancients, all the inhabitants of the land into the house of your God: and cry ye to the Lord:
