And meet impudent dogs, they never had enough: the shepherds themselves knew no understanding. All have turned aside into their own way, every one after his own gain, from the first even to the last.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is the service of idols.

For, from the least of them even to the greatest, all are given to covetousness: and from the prophet even to the priest, all are guilty of deceit.

Having eyes full of adultery and of sin that ceaseth not: alluring unstable souls, having their heart exercised with covetousness, children of malediction:

For they that will become rich, fall into temptation, and into the snare of the devil, and into many unprofitable and hurtful desires, which drown men into destruction and perdition.

And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man's life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.

And they come to thee, as if a people were coming in, and my people sit before thee: and hear thy words, and do them not: for they turn them into a song of their mouth, and their heart goeth after their covetousness.

But thy eyes and thy heart are set upon covetousness and upon shedding innocent blood and upon oppression and running after evil works.

Therefore I will give their women to strangers, their fields to others for an inheritance: because from the least even to the greatest all follow covetousness: from the prophet even to the priest all deal deceitfully.

O Lord, thy eyes are upon truth: thou hast struck them, and they have not grieved: thou hast bruised them, and they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than the rock and they have refused to return.

In vain have I struck your children: they have not received correction. Your sword hath devoured your prophets: your generation is like a ravaging lion.

Verily thou art a hidden God, the God of Israel, the saviour.

And the people are not returned to him who hath struck them, and have not sought after the Lord of hosts.

And I will wait for the Lord who hath hid his face from the house of Jacob: and I will look for him.

Woe to the sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a wicked seed, ungracious children: they have forsaken the Lord, they have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel, they are gone away backwards.

Better it is to see what thou mayst desire, than to desire that which thou canst not know. But this also is vanity, and presumption of spirit.

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not.

Their land is filled with silver and gold: and there is no end of their treasures.

Who hath given Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to robbers? Hath not the Lord himself, against whom we have sinned? And they would not walk in his ways: and they have not hearkened to his law.

Be not very angry, O Lord, and remember no longer our iniquity: behold, see we are all thy people.

He that sacrificeth an ox is as if he slew a man: he that killeth a sheep in sacrifice, as if he should brain a dog: he that offereth an oblation, as if he should offer swine's blood; he that remembereth incense, as if he should bless an idol. All these things have they chosen in their ways: and their soul is delighted in their abominations.

Return, O ye revolting children, saith the Lord: for I am your husband: and I will take you, one of a city, and two of a kindred, and will bring you into Sion.

Return, you rebellious children, and I will heal your rebellions. Behold, we come to thee: for thou art the Lord our God.

O thou that dwellest upon many waters, rich in treasures, thy end is come for thy entire destruction.

I attended and hearkened; no man speaketh what is good. There is none that doth penance for his sin, saying: What have I done? They are all turned to their own course, as a horse rushing to the battle.
