Isaiah 48:1

HEAR ye these things, O house of Jacob, you that are called by the name of Israel and are come forth out of the waters of Juda, you who swear by the name of the Lord and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in justice.

And thou shalt swear: As the Lord liveth in truth and in judgement and in justice: and the Gentiles shall bless him and shall praise him.

Let their habitation be made desolate: and let there be none to dwell in their tabernacles.

And though they say: The Lord liveth; this also they will swear falsely.

In which he that is blessed upon the earth shall be blessed in God, Amen; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by God, Amen: because the former distresses are forgotten and because they are hid from my eyes.

Take heed diligently lest thou forget the Lord, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and shalt serve him only: and thou shalt swear by his name.

But he said: Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel: for if thou hast been strong against God, how much more shalt thou prevail against men?

Behold, I will bring of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie. Behold, I will make them to come and adore before thy feet. And they shall know that I have loved thee.

I know thy tribulation and thy poverty, but thou art rich: and thou art blasphemed by them that say they are Jews and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

Speaking lies in hypocrisy, and having their conscience seared,

That is to say, not they that are the children of the flesh, are the children of God; but they, that are the children of the promise, are accounted for the seed.

Not as though the word of God hath miscarried. For all are not Israelites that are of Israel:

But if thou art called a Jew and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him: and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.

But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men, for you yourselves do not enter in; and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter.

And I will come to you in judgment, and will be a speedy witness against sorcerers, and adulterers, and false swearers, and them that oppress the hireling in his wages; the widows, and the fatherless: and oppress the stranger, and have not feared me, saith the Lord of hosts.

And them that worship the host of heaven upon the tops of houses, and them that adore, and swear by the Lord, and swear by Melchom.

The Lord hath sworn by his right hand and by the arm of his strength: Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thy enemies: and the sons of the strangers shall not drink thy wine, for which thou hast laboured.

For they seek me from day to day and desire to know my ways, as a nation that hath done justice and hath not forsaken the judgment of their God. They ask of me the judgments of justice: they are willing to approach to God.

I have sworn by myself: the word of justice shall go out of my mouth and shall not return:

One shall say: I am the Lord's: and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob: and another shall subscribe with his hand, To the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

O Lord our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us: only in thee let us remember thy name.

Let thy fountains be conveyed abroad, and in the streets divide thy waters.

That we may know thy way upon earth: thy salvation in all nations.

The just shall rejoice in the Lord, and shall hope in him: and all the upright in heart shall be praised.

Unto this day they followed the old manner: they fear not the Lord, neither do they keep his ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and the commandment, which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he surnamed Israel:

Israel shall dwell in safety, and alone. The eye of Jacob in a land of corn and wine, and the heavens shall be misty with dew.

Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him only. To him thou shalt adhere; and shalt swear by his name.

And when the Lord had heard this, he said to me: I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to thee. They have spoken all things well.

Water shall flow out of his bucket: and his seed shall be in many waters. For Agag his king shall be removed: and his kingdom shall be taken away.

Thou shalt not swear falsely by my name, nor profane the name of thy God. I am the Lord.

Keep all things that I have said to you. And by the name of strange gods you shall not swear, neither shall it be heard out of your mouth.

Saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called him Israel.

I have brought my justice near: it shall not be afar off, and my salvation shall not tarry. I will give salvation in Sion and my glory in Israel.

And we are all become as one unclean: and all our justices as the rag of a menstruous woman. And we have all fallen as a leaf: and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Therefore hear ye the word of the Lord, all Juda, you that dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Juda, in the land of Egypt, saying: The Lord God liveth.

And he said to me: This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the earth: for every thief shall be judged as is there written: and every one that sweareth in like manner shall be judged by it.

But Giezi the servant of the man of God said: My master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving of him that which he brought. As the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take some thing of him.

Because they have persecuted him whom thou hast smitten; and they have added to the grief of my wounds.

GIVE ear to me, you that follow that which is just, and you that seek the Lord. Look unto the rock whence you are hewn and to the hole of the pit from which you are dug out.

Look unto Abraham your father and to Sara that bore you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and multiplied him.

The house of Jacob saith: Is the spirit of the Lord straitened, or are these his thoughts? Are not my words good to him that walketh uprightly?
