And he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria, and said to them: Behold, the Lord the God of your fathers, being angry with Juda, hath delivered them into your hands, and you have butchered them cruelly, so that your cruelty hath reached up to heaven.

And the son said to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, I am not now worthy to be called thy son.

Therefore I reprehend myself, and do penance in dust and ashes.

O Lord God of Israel, thou art just: for we remain yet to be saved as at this day. Behold, we are before thee in our sin: for there can be no standing before thee in this matter.

What fruit therefore had you then in those things, of which you are now ashamed? For the end of them is death.

That thou mayest remember and be confounded and mayest no more open thy mouth because of thy confusion, when I shall be pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.

For after thou didst convert me, I did penance: and after thou didst show unto me, I struck my thigh. I am confounded and ashamed, because I have borne the reproach of my youth.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not so much as lift up his eyes towards heaven; but struck his breast, saying: O god, be merciful to me a sinner.

Then if they do penance in their heart in the place of captivity, and being converted make supplication to thee in their captivity, saying: We have sinned, we have done unjustly, we have committed wickedness:

We would have cured Babylon, but she is not healed: let us forsake her and let us go every man to his own land: because her judgment hath reached even to the heavens and is lifted up to the clouds.

And returning to the Lord, he said: I beseech thee: this people hath sinned a heinous sin, and they have made to themselves gods of gold. Either forgive them this trespass,

Until they confess their iniquities, and the iniquities of their ancestors, whereby they have transgressed me, and walked contrary unto me.

Let thy ears be attentive, and thy eyes open, to hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, night and day, for the children of Israel thy servants. And I confess the sins of the children of Israel, by which they have sinned against thee: I and my father's house have sinned.

I spoke with my tongue: O Lord, make me know my end. And what is the number of my days: that I may know what is wanting to me.

Nun. We have done wickedly and provoked thee to wrath: therefore thou art inexorable.
