And I proclaimed there a fast by the river Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before the Lord our God, and might ask of him a right way for us, and for our children, and for all our substance.

And Josaphat being seized with fear betook himself wholly to pray to the Lord: and he proclaimed a fast for all Juda.

Sanctify ye a fast, call an assembly; gather together the ancients, all the inhabitants of the land into the house of your God: and cry ye to the Lord:

And thy ears shall hear the word of one admonishing thee behind thy back: This is the way; walk ye in it: and go not aside neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

And they gathered together to Masphath. And they drew water, and poured it out before the Lord; and they fasted on that day, and they said there: We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Masphath.

And the men of Ninive believed in God: and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least.

And this shall be to you an everlasting ordinance: The seventh month, the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no work, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.

Every soul that is not afflicted on this day shall perish from among his people.

For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are far off, whomsoever the Lord our God shall call.

And I will lead the blind into the way which they know not: and in the paths which they were ignorant of I will make them walk. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things have I done to them, and have not forsaken them.

But as for me in the multitude of thy mercy, I will come into thy house: I will worship towards thy holy temple, in thy fear.

And I gathered them together to the river, which runneth down to Ahava, and we stayed there three days. And I sought among the people and among the priests for the sons of Levi, and found none there.

I know, O Lord, that the way of a man is not his: neither is it in a man to walk and to direct his steps.

Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? Is this it: To wind his head about like a circle and to spread sackcloth and ashes? Wilt thou call this a fast and a day acceptable to the Lord?

Why have we fasted: and thou hast not regarded? Have we humbled our souls: and thou hast not taken notice? Behold, in the day of your fast your own will is found: and you exact of all your debtors.

They shall not hunger, nor thirst: neither shall the heat nor the sun strike them. For he that is merciful to them shall be their shepherd, and at the fountains of waters he shall give them drink.

In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps.

Wherefore all the children of Israel came to the house of God, and sat and wept before the Lord. And they fasted that day till the evening, and offered to him holocausts, and victims of peace-offerings:

For it is a sabbath of rest: and you shall afflict your souls by a perpetual religion.

And a path and a way shall be there, and it shall be called the holy way: the unclean shall not pass over it. And this shall be unto you a straight way, so that fools shall not err therein.

O Lord our Lord, how admirable is thy name in the whole earth! For thy magnificence is elevated above the heavens.

Then we set forward from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month to go to Jerusalem. And the hand of our God was upon us, and delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.

But your children, of whom you said, that they should be a prey to the enemies, will I bring in: that they may see the land which you have despised.

Would God that we had died in Egypt! And would God we may die in this vast wilderness, and that the Lord may not bring us into this land: lest we fall by the sword, and our wives and children be led away captives. Is it not better to return into Egypt?

And he caused it to be proclaimed and published in Ninive from the mouth of the king and of his princes, saying: Let neither men nor beasts, oxen nor sheep, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water.

And Juda gathered themselves together to pray to the Lord: and all came out of their cities to make supplication to him.

And in the four and twentieth day of the month the children of Israel came together with fasting and with sackcloth, and earth upon them.

Conduct me, O Lord, in thy justice: because of my enemies, direct my way in thy sight.

For David himself. I will praise thee, O lord, with my whole heart: for thou hast heard the words of my mouth. I will sing praise to thee in the sight of his angels:

And let the Lord thy God shew us the way by which we may walk and the thing that we must do.
