And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in evil case, because it was said to them: There shall not a whit be diminished of the bricks for every day.

And the overseers of the works and the taskmasters went out and said to the people: Thus saith Pharao, I allow you no straw.

And the army of his fighting men, that went out to war, was under the hand of Jehiel the scribe, and Maasias the doctor, and under the hand of Henanias, who was one of the king's captains.

Thou shalt appoint judges and magistrates in all thy gates, which the Lord thy God shall give thee, in all thy tribes. That they may judge the people with just judgment,

And I took out of your tribes men wise and honourable, and appointed them rulers, tribunes, and centurions, and officers over fifties, and over tens, who might teach you all things.

And the Lord said to Moses: Gather unto me seventy men of the ancients of Israel, whom thou knowest to be ancients and masters of the people. And thou shalt bring them to the door of the tabernacle of the covenant: and shalt make them stand there with thee,

And the Lord said to him: I have seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry; because of the rigour of them that are over the works.

Therefore he set over them masters of the works, to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharao cities of tabernacles, Phithom and Ramesses.

The just regardeth the lives of his beasts: but the bowels of the wicked are cruel.

And Josue gathered together all the tribes of Israel in Sichem: and called for the ancients, and the princes, and the judges, and the masters. And they stood in the sight of the Lord.

You shall give straw no more to the people to make brick, as before: but let them go and gather straw.
