And Moses spoke all these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned exceedingly.

Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and take off their robes and cast away their broidered garments and be clothed with astonishment: they shall sit on the ground and with amazement shall wonder at thy sudden fall.

You shall have crowns on your heads, and shoes on your feet: you shall not lament nor weep, but you shall pine away for your iniquities, and every one shall sigh with his brother.

Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead: let the tire of thy head be upon thee, and thy shoes on thy feet, and cover not thy face, nor eat the meat of mourners.

Therefore the whole multitude crying wept that night.

Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying: When you fasted, and mourned in the fifth and the seventh month for these seventy years: did you keep a fast unto me?

To speak to the priests of the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying: Must I weep in the fifth month, or must I sanctify myself as I have now done for many years?

And the word came to the king of Ninive; and he rose up out of his throne, and cast away his robe from him, and was clothed with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howled in their beds: they have thought upon wheat and wine, they are departed from me.

Be astonished, ye rich women, be troubled, ye confident ones: strip you, and be confounded, gird your loins.

And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off they knew him not. And crying out they wept: and rending their garments they sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven.

Then Job rose up, and rent his garments: and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshipped,

And when I had heard this word, I rent my mantle and my coat, and plucked off the hairs of my head and my beard: and I sat down mourning.

And when king Ezechias heard these words, he rent his garments, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.

And when Achab had heard these words, he rent his garments, and put haircloth upon his flesh, and fasted and slept in sackcloth, and walked with his head cast down.

And Miphiboseth the son of Saul came down to meet the king and he had neither washed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his garments from the day that the king went out, until the day of his return in peace.

And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons: Uncover not your heads, and rend not your garments, lest perhaps you die, and indignation come upon all the congregation. Let your brethren, and all the house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord has kindled.

So the children of Israel laid aside their ornaments by mount Horeb.

But he slew of the men of Bethsames, because they had seen the ark of the Lord; and he slew of the people seventy men, and fifty thousand of the common people. And the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten the people with a great slaughter.
