Now therefore see what I shall answer him who sent me.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

We, thy servants have reckoned up the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and not so much as one was wanting.

And Satan rose up against Israel: and moved David to number Israel.

And Joab answered: The Lord make his people a hundred times more than they are! But, my lord the king, are they not all thy servants? Why doth my lord seek this thing, which may be imputed as a sin to Israel?

And they made a proclamation in Juda and Jerusalem, that every man should bring to the Lord the money which Moses the servant of God appointed for all Israel in the desert.
