And thou shalt remember all the way through which the Lord thy God hath brought thee for forty years through the desert, to afflict thee and to prove thee: and that the things that were in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.

These are the nations which the Lord left, that by them he might instruct Israel, and all that had not known the wars of the Chanaanites:

And he left them, that he might try Israel by them, whether they would hear the commandments of the Lord, which he had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses, or not.

That through them I may try Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord, and walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or not.

And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee.

And the Lord said to Moses: Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you. Let the people go forth, and gather what is sufficient for every day: that I may prove them whether they will walk in my law, or not.

He went out to the spring of the waters, and cast the salt into it, and said: Thus saith the Lord: I have healed these waters, and there shall be no more in them death or barrenness.

For the word of the cross, to them indeed that perish, is foolishness; but to them that are saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God.

Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will melt and try them. For what else shall I do before the daughter of my people?

As silver is tried by fire, and gold in the furnace: so the Lord trieth the hearts.

They shall still increase in a fruitful old age: and shall be well treated,

I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to thee.

But he said: Bring some meal. And when they had brought it, he cast it into the pot, and said: Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was now no bitterness in the pot.

And when Pharao drew near, the children of Israel, lifting up their eyes, saw the Egyptians behind them: and they feared exceedingly, and cried to the Lord.

But you like men shall die: and shall fall like one of the princes.

Thou shalt not hear the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the Lord your God trieth you, that it may appear whether you love him with all your heart, and with all your soul, or not.

And Moses cried to the Lord, saying: What shall I do to this people? Yet a little more and they will stone me.

And the Lord said to me: If Moses and Samuel shall stand before me, my soul is not towards this people. Cast them out from my sight and let them go forth.

And Moses said to the people: Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that the dread of him might be in you, and you should not sin.

And the man of God said: Where did it fall? And he shewed him the place. Then he cut off a piece of wood, and cast it in thither: and the iron swam.

And when I had turned myself, behold on the bank of the torrent were very many trees on both sides.

And he said to me: These waters that issue forth toward the hillocks of sand to the east, and go down to the plains of the desert, shall go into the sea, and shall go out, and the waters shall be healed.
