This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell.

The heart is perverse above all things and unsearchable. Who can know it?

For because sentence is not speedily pronounced against the evil, the children of men commit evils without any fear.

And I have given my heart to know prudence, and learning, and errors, and folly: and I have perceived that in these also there was labour, and vexation of spirit,

For we ourselves also were some time unwise, incredulous, erring, slaves to divers desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

But had a check of his madness, the dumb beast used to the yoke, which speaking with man's voice, forbade the folly of the prophet.

As he spoke these things, and made his answer, Festus said with a loud voice: Paul, thou art beside thyself: much learning doth make thee mad.

And forthwith an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the honour to God: and being eaten up by worms, he gave up the ghost.

And returning to himself, he said: How many hired servants in my father's house abound with bread, and I here perish with hunger?

And they were filled with madness; and they talked one with another, what they might do to Jesus.

And the dust return into its earth, from whence it was, and the spirit return to God, who gave it.

But all things are kept uncertain for the time to come, because all things equally happen to the just and to the wicked, to the good and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to him that offereth victims, and to him that despiseth sacrifices. As the good is, so also is the sinner: as the perjured, so he also that sweareth truth.

Much more than it was: it is a great depth, who shall find it out?

The wicked man shall be driven out in his wickedness: but the just hath hope in his death.

Thou hast loved malice more than goodness: and iniquity rather than to speak righteousness.

How much more is man abominable and unprofitable, who drinketh iniquity like water?

And the Lord smelled a sweet savour, and said: I will no more curse the earth for the sake of man: for the imagination and thought of man's heart are prone to evil from his youth: therefore I will no more destroy every living soul as I have done.

And oftentimes punishing them, in every synagogue, I compelled them to blaspheme: and being yet more mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities.

And God seeing that the wickedness of men was great on the earth, and that all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times,

The eyes of a wise man are in his head: the fool walketh in darkness: and I learned that they were to die both alike.

A good name is better than precious ointments: and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

There is no man that liveth always, or that hopeth for this: a living dog is better than a dead lion.

And you also have done worse than your fathers: for, behold, every one of you walketh after the perverseness of his evil heart, so as not to hearken to me.

I am the Lord who search the heart and prove the reins: who give to every one according to his way and according to the fruit of his devices.

One thing there is that I have spoken: Both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.

And yet they shall sleep together in the dust, and worms shall cover them.

Thou who preparest the mountains by thy strength, being girded with power:

I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skilful: but time and chance in all.
