And say ye to Amasa: Art not thou my bone, and my flesh? So do God to me and add more, if thou be not the chief captain of the army before me always in the place of Joab.

Now Absalom appointed Amasa in Joab's stead over the army. And Amasa was the son of a man who was called Jethra of Jezrael, who went in to Abigail the daughter of Naas, the sister of Sarvia who was the mother of Joab.

And Jezabel sent a messenger to Elias, saying: Such and such things may the gods do to me, and add still more, if by this hour to-morrow I make not thy life as the life of one of them.

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside to the middle of the gate, to speak to him treacherously. And he stabbed him there in the groin: and he died, in revenge of the blood of Asael his brother.

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron, saying: Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

And the king said to Amasa: Assemble to me all the men of Juda against the third day. And be thou here present.
