And Absalom after he was fled, and come into Gessur, was there three years. And king David ceased to pursue after Absalom, because he was comforted concerning the death of Amnon.

For thy servant made a vow, when he was in Gessur of Syria, saying: If the Lord shall bring me again into Jerusalem, I will offer sacrifice to the Lord.

And Absalom answered Joab: I sent to thee beseeching thee to come to me, that I might send thee to the king, to say to him: Wherefore am I come from Gessur? It had been better for me to be there. I beseech thee therefore that I may see the face of the king: and if he be mindful of my iniquity, let him kill me.

Then Joab arose and went to Gessur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

But Absalom fled away. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes and looked: and, behold, there came much people by a byway on the side of the mountain.
