And the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying: In such and such a place let us lay ambushes.

Take counsel together, and it shall be defeated: speak a word, and it shall not be done: because God is with us.

There is no wisdom, there is no prudence, there is no counsel against the Lord.

Designs are strengthened by counsels: and wars are to be managed by governments.

And it came to pass after these things, that Benadad king of Syria gathered together all his army, and went up, and besieged Samaria.

And the king of Syria had commanded the two and thirty captains of the chariots, saying: You shall not fight against any, small or great, but against the king of Israel only.

And he said to him: The cities which my father took from thy father, I will restore. And do thou make thee streets in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria: and having made a league, I will depart from thee. So he made a league with him, and let him go.

But the servants of the king of Syria said to him: Their gods are gods of the hills: therefore they have overcome us. But it is better that we should fight against them in the plains, and we shall overcome them.

And Benadad, king of Syria, gathered together all his host. And there were two and thirty kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and going up, he fought against Samaria, and besieged it.

And he said: Take it up. And he put out his hand and took it.

And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying: Beware that thou pass not to such a place; for the Syrians are there in ambush.

And there passed three years without war between Syria and Israel.
