For the Lord had humbled Juda because of Achaz the king of Juda: for he had stripped it of help, and had contemned the Lord.

And he had brethren, the sons of Josaphat, Azarias, and Jahiel, and Zacharias, and Azaria, and Michael, and Saphatias. All these were the sons of Josaphat king of Juda.

Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

For thou hast kept the statutes of Amri, and all the works of the house of Achab: and thou hast walked according to their wills, that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing, and you shall bear the reproach of my people.

Ephraim is under oppression, and broken in judgment: because he began to go after filthiness.

Humiliation followeth the proud: and glory shall uphold the humble of spirit.

And when Moses saw that the people were naked, (for Aaron had stripped them by occasion of the shame of the filth, and had set them naked among their enemies,)

And he said to him: And who hath told thee that thou wast naked, but that thou hast eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat?

And the eyes of them both were opened: and when they perceived themselves to be naked, they sewed together fig leaves, and made themselves aprons.

Because by mistake he trespassed against the Lord.

And the Lord shall give up Israel for the sins of Jeroboam, who hath sinned, and made Israel to sin.

And he said: I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father's house, who have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and have followed Baalim.

Achaz was twenty years old when he began to reign; and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord as David his father had done.

He sacrificed also, and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

So Manasses seduced Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to do evil beyond all the nations which the Lord had destroyed before the face of the children of Israel.

Justice exalteth a nation: but sin maketh nations miserable.
