Did not Achan the son of Zare transgress the commandment of the Lord, and his wrath lay upon all the people of Israel? And he was but one man, and would to God he alone had perished in his wickedness!

Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the children of unbelief.

After this Joas had a mind to repair the house of the Lord.

And Jehu the son of Hanani, the seer, met him and said to him: Thou helpest the ungodly; and thou art joined in friendship with them that hate the Lord: and therefore thou didst deserve indeed the wrath of the Lord.

For they also built them altars, and statues, and groves upon every high hill and under every green tree.

For I will be like a lioness to Ephraim, and like a lion's whelp to the house of Juda: I, I will catch, and go: I will take away, and there is none that can rescue.

Therefore the wrath of the Lord hath been stirred up against Juda and Jerusalem: and he hath delivered them to trouble, and to destruction, and to be hissed at, as you see with your eyes.

But hast walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and hast made Juda and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, imitating the fornication of the house of Achab: moreover also thou hast killed thy brethren, the house of thy father, better men than thyself:

But hast done evil above all that were before thee, and hast made thee strange gods and molten gods, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:

And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.

The Lord chose new wars, and he himself overthrew the gates of the enemies: a shield and spear was not seen among forty thousand of Israel.

But destroy their altars, break their statues, and cut down their groves.

Beware thou never join in friendship with the inhabitants of that land, which may be thy ruin.

And after the death of Joiada the princes of Juda went in, and worshipped the king: and he was soothed by their services and hearkened to them.

When their children shall remember their altars and their groves and their green trees upon high mountains,

But after Gedeon was dead, the children of Israel turned again, and committed fornication with Baalim. And they made a covenant with Baal, that he should be their god.

And when the kingdom of Roboam was strengthened and fortified, he forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him.

And in the fifth year of the reign of Roboam, Sesac king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem (because they had sinned against the Lord)

So he did evil in the sight of the Lord, as the house of Achab did: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father, to his destruction.

Wherefore the Lord, being angry against Amasias, sent a prophet to him, to say to him: Why hast thou adored gods that have not delivered their own people out of thy hand?

Because they have forsaken me, and have sacrificed to strange gods, to provoke me to wrath with all the works of their hands, therefore my wrath shall fall upon this place and shall not be quenched.
