And king David said to all the assembly: Solomon, my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is as yet young and tender; and the work is great, for a house is prepared not for man, but for God.
And this house shall be made an example of. Every one that shall pass by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss, and say: Why hath the Lord done thus to this land, and to this house?
And they have turned the ornament of their jewels into pride and have made of it the images of their abominations and idols: therefore I have made it an uncleanness to them.
Is it then to be thought that God should indeed dwell upon earth? For if heaven, and the heavens of heavens cannot contain thee, how much less this house which I have built?
Who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to promise thee all these things? All things are thine: and we have given thee what we received of thy hand.
Is it credible then that God should dwell with men on the earth? If heaven and the heavens of heavens do not contain thee, how much less this house, which I have built?
