And there were gathered to him vain men, and children of Belial. And they prevailed against Roboam the son of Solomon: for Roboam was unexperienced, and of a fearful heart, and could not resist them.

King Roboam therefore was strengthened in Jerusalem, and reigned. He was one and forty years old when he began to reign; and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord chose out of all the tribes of Israel, to establish his name there. And the name of his mother was Naama, an Ammonitess.

And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him.

For whereas for the time you ought to be masters, you have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of God: and you are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

He that tilleth his ground, shall be filled with bread: but he that followeth idleness shall be filled with poverty.

He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that pursueth idleness is very foolish. He that is delighted in passing his time over wine, leaveth a reproach in his strong holds.

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. That I may see the delight of the Lord, and may visit his temple.

The children of foolish and base men, and not appearing at all upon the earth.

And all the people upon the king's speaking roughly said thus unto him: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai. Return to thy dwellings, O Israel: and do thou, O David, feed thy own house. And Israel went away to their dwellings.

And suborn two men, sons of Belial against him: and let them bear false witness that he hath blasphemed God and the king: and then carry him out, and stone him and so let him die.

And all that were in distress and oppressed with debt, and under affliction of mind gathered themselves unto him. And he became their prince. And there were with him about four hundred men.

Then he fled and avoided them and dwelt in the land of Tob. And there were gathered to him needy men, and robbers: and they followed him as their prince.

Children of Belial are gone out of the midst of thee, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, and have said: Let us go, and serve strange gods which you know not:

But I as yet am tender, though anointed king: and these men the sons of Sarvia are too hard for me. The Lord reward him that doth evil according to his wickedness.
