And Juda was put to the worst before Israel: and they fled every man to their dwellings.

And the king of Syria had commanded the two and thirty captains of the chariots, saying: You shall not fight against any, small or great, but against the king of Israel only.

And he said: I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, like sheep that have no shepherd. And the Lord said: These have no master: let every man of them return to his house in peace.

Thus saith the Lord: You shall not go up nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel. Let every man return to his house, for this thing is from me. They hearkened to the word of the Lord, and returned from their journey, as the Lord had commanded them.

Then the people, seeing that the king would not hearken to them, answered him, saying: What portion have we in David? Or what inheritance in the son of Isai? Go home to thy dwellings, O Israel. Now David, look to thy own house. So Israel departed to their dwellings.

Then the king arose and sat in the gate: and it was told to all the people that the king sat in the gate. And all the people came before the king but Israel fled to their own dwellings.

So the Philistines fought; and Israel was overthrown; and every man fled to his own dwelling. And there was an exceeding great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

The children of Israel also returned by their tribes, and families, to their dwellings. In those days there was no king in Israel: but every one did that which seemed right to himself.

And the battle was fought that day, and the king of Israel stood in his chariot against the Syrians. And he died in the evening: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the chariot.

And the king died, and was carried into Samaria: and they buried the king in Samaria.
