For professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

He bringeth counsellors to a foolish end, and judges to insensibility.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written: I will catch the wise in their own craftiness.

For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the prudence of the prudent I will reject.

That make void the tokens of diviners and make the soothsayers mad: that turn the wise backward, and that: make their knowledge foolish:

He changeth the heart of the princes of the people of the earth, and deceiveth them, that they walk in vain where there is no way.

Howbeit we speak wisdom among the perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, neither of the princes of this world that come to nought;

WHO hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

Thy heart shall meditate fear. Where is the learned? Where is he that pondereth the words of the law? Where is the teacher of little ones?

He changeth the speech of the true speakers, and taketh away the doctrine of the aged.

But Achitophel, seeing that his counsel was not followed, saddled his ass, and arose and went home to his house and to his city. And putting his house in order hanged himself, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

And Absalom, and all the men of Israel said: The counsel of Chusai the Arachite is better than the counsel of Achitophel. And by the will of the Lord the profitable counsel of Achitophel was defeated, that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.

Now the counsel of Achitophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man should consult God. So was all the counsel of Achitophel, both when he was with David, and when he was with Absalom.

And it was told David that Achitophel also was in the conspiracy with Absalom, and David said: Infatuate, O Lord, I beseech thee, the counsel of Achitophel.

Who shall fear thee, O king of nations, for thine is the glory. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like unto thee.

And he that received the seed among thorns, is he that heareth the word, and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choketh up the word, and he becometh fruitless.

Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

And certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoics disputed with him; and some said: What is it, that this word sower would say? But others: He seemeth to be a setter forth of new gods; because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.

For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also, and divinity: so that they are inexcusable.

For see your vocation, brethren, that there are not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble:

But the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise; and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong.

And the base things of the world, and the things that are contemptible, hath God chosen, and things that are not, that he might bring to nought things that are:

Which none of the princes of this world knew; for if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.

Let no man deceive himself: if any man among you seem to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Know you not that the saints shall judge this world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

But whilst we are judged, we are chastised by the Lord, that we be not condemned with this world.

Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God.
