Moreover David and the chief officers of the army separated for the ministry the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Idithun: to prophesy with harps, and with psalteries, and with cymbals according to their number serving in their appointed office.

But now bring me hither a minstrel. And when the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came upon him, and he said:

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is. And when thou shalt be come there into the city, thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place, with a psaltery and a timbrel, and a pipe, and a harp before them; and they shall be prophesying.

And his brother Asaph, who stood on his right hand; Asaph the son of Barachias, the son of Samaa.

And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, and to keep the dedication, and to rejoice with thanksgiving, and with singing, and with cymbals and psalteries and harps.

And they did all faithfully. Now the overseers of the workmen were Jahath and Abdias of the sons of Merari, Zacharias and Mosollam of the sons of Caath, who hastened the work: all Levites skilful to play on instruments.

And when she saw the king standing upon the step in the entrance, and the princes, and the companies about him, and all the people of the land rejoicing, and sounding with trumpets, and playing on instruments of divers kinds, and the voice of those that praised, she rent her garments, and said: Treason, treason.

And of Idithun: the sons of Idithun, Godolias, Seri, Jeseias, and Hasabias, and Mathathias, six, under the hand of their father Idithun, who prophesied with a harp to give thanks and to praise the Lord.

How long will you judge unjustly: and accept the persons of the wicked?

Now the chief of the Levites were Hasebia, Serebia, and Josue the son of Cedmihel. And their brethren by their courses: to praise and to give thanks according to the commandment of David the man of God, and to wait equally in order.

And Ezechias appointed companies of the priests, and the Levites, by their courses, every man in his own office; to wit, both of the priests, and of the Levites: for holocausts, and for peace-offerings: to minister, and to praise, and to sing in the gates of the camp of the Lord.

And Joiada the priest gave to the captains the spears, and the shields, and targets of king David, which he had dedicated in the house of the Lord.

And in the seventh year Joiada being encouraged took the captains of hundreds to wit, Azarias the son of Jeroham, and Ismahel the son of Johanan, and Azarias the son of Obed, and Maasias the son of Adaias, and Elisaphat the son of Zechri; and made a covenant with them.

And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, and the priests and Levites.

Sadoc also a young man of excellent disposition, and the house of his father, twenty-two principal men.

And the sons of Merari their brethren, on the left hand; Ethan the son of Cusi, the son of Abdi, the son of Meloch,

These are the chief of the singing men of the families of the Levites, who dwelt in the chambers, by the temple, that they might serve continually day and night in their ministry.

Of the sons of Asaph: Zacchur, and Joseph, and Nathania, and Asarela, sons of Asaph; under the hand of Asaph prophesying near the king.

Both the Levites and the singing men, that is, both they that were under Asaph, and they that were under Heman, and they that were under Idithun, with their sons, and their brethren, clothed with fine linen, sounded with cymbals, and psalteries, and harps, standing on the east side of the altar: and with them a hundred and twenty priests, sounding with trumpets.

And he appointed according to the order of David his father the offices of the priests in their ministries: and the Levites in their order to give praise, and minister before the priests according to the duty of every day: and the porters in their divisions by gate and gate. For so David, the man of God, had commanded.

And Joiada appointed overseers in the house of the Lord, under the hands of the priests and the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the Lord: to offer holocausts to the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses, with joy and singing, according to the disposition of David.

And the singers the sons of Asaph stood in their order, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Idithun, the prophets of the king. And the porters kept guard at every gate, so as not to depart one moment from their service. And therefore their brethren the Levites prepared meats for them.

And without the inner gate were the chambers of the singing men in the inner court, which was on the side of the gate that looketh to the north: and their prospect was towards the south, one at the side of the east gate, which looketh toward the north.

And the king made of the thyine trees the rails of the house of the Lord and of the king's house, and citterns and harps for singers: there were no such thyine trees as these brought, nor seen unto this day.)

So the sons of Levi were Gerson, Caath, and Merari.

And David and all Israel played before God with all their might: with hymns, and with harps, and with psalteries, and timbrels, and cymbals, and trumpets,

And all Israel brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord with joyful shouting, and sounding with the sound of the comet, and with trumpets, and cymbals, and psalteries, and harps.

And the first lot came forth to Joseph, who was of Asaph. The second to Godolias: to him and his sons, and his brethren, twelve.

And of the sons of Elisaphan, Samri, and Jahiel. Also of the sons of Asaph, Zacharias, and Mathanias.

And of the sons of Heman, Jahiel, and Semei: and of the sons of Idithun, Semeias, and Oziel.

The singing men: The children of Asaph, a hundred twenty-eight.

And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses over the works of God in Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.

And Mathania the son of Micha, the son of Zebedei, the son of Asaph, was the principal man to praise, and to give glory in prayer, and Becbecia the second, one of his brethren, and Abda the son of Samua, the son of Galal, the son of Idithun.

Judge for the needy and fatherless: do justice to the humble and the poor.
