Then I put my brother Hanani  in charge of Jerusalem,  along with Hananiah,  commander of the fortress,  because he was a faithful man who feared God  more than most.

Hanani,  one of my brothers, arrived with men from Judah, and I questioned them about Jerusalem and the Jewish remnant  that had survived the exile.


‘His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.”

But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating dishonest profit.  Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.


On the third day Joseph said to them, ‘I fear God   #– #do this and you will live.


‘Who then is a faithful and wise servant,   whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time?


I said to them, ‘Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes.’
