‘Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

So whenever you give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.


‘But the tax collector, standing far off,   would not even raise his eyes to heaven   but kept striking his chest   and saying, “God, have mercy on me,   , a sinner! ”


And whenever you stand   praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive   him, so that your Father   in heaven   will also forgive   you your wrongdoing.’


You will call to me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.


When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look at you; even if you offer countless prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.


They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher judgement.’


But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.   ,


Now he told them a parable on the need for them to pray  always and not give up.


When Daniel learned that the document had been signed, he went into his house. The windows in its upstairs room opened towards Jerusalem,  and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God,  just as he had done before.


Pray  at all times in the Spirit  with every prayer and request, and stay alert  with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.


‘Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat   in the synagogues   and greetings in the marketplaces.


And if you believe, you will receive   whatever you ask for in prayer.’


Until now you have asked for nothing in my name.   Ask and you will receive,   so that your joy may be complete.


He  also said in his teaching, ‘Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes   and who want greetings in the marketplaces,


Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.’


‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.   ,


Everyone with a proud heart is detestable to the  Lord; be assured,  he will not go unpunished.


They love the place of honour at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,


The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable to the  Lord, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.


‘Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces   so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.


‘Be careful not to practise your righteousness   in front of others to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father in heaven.


They do everything   to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries   and lengthen their tassels.   ,


But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort.
