‘My kingdom   is not of this world,’ said Jesus. ‘If my kingdom were of this world,   my servants   would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is,   my kingdom is not from here.’


As  they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem,  and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear straight away.


‘The   Law and the Prophets   were until John; since then, the good news of the kingdom of God   has been proclaimed, and everyone is urgently invited to enter it.


‘In the days of those kings, the God of the heavens will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed,  and this kingdom will not be left to another people. It will crush all these kingdoms  and bring them to an end, but will itself endure for ever.


“We are wiping off even the dust of your town that clings to our feet as a witness against you.   Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.”


So he answered me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: “Not by strength or by might, but by my Spirit,”  says the Lord of Armies.


One Sabbath, when he went in to eat  at the house of one of the leading Pharisees,  they were watching him closely.
