Leviticus 23:3

‘Work may be done for six days, but on the seventh day there is to be a Sabbath of complete rest,  a sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; it is a Sabbath  to the Lord wherever you live.

‘Each of you is to respect his mother and father.  You are to keep my Sabbaths; I am the Lord your God.


‘Do your work  for six days but rest on the seventh day so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave as well as the resident foreigner may be refreshed.


But the leader of the synagogue, indignant  because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, ‘There are six days when work should be done;  therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.’


‘You are to labour six days but you must rest  on the seventh day; you must even rest during ploughing and harvesting times.


I was in the Spirit  , on the Lord’s day, and I heard a loud voice behind me like a trumpet


For since ancient times, Moses has had those who proclaim him in every city, and every Sabbath day he is read aloud in the synagogues.’


Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes.  And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.


‘If you avoid desecrating the Sabbath, from doing whatever you want on my holy day; if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the  Lord  honourable; if you honour it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or talking business;  ,


As for the foreigners who join themselves to the  Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to become his servants – all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold firmly to my covenant –


Happy is the person who does this, the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.


Understand that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he will give you two days’ worth of bread. Each of you stay where you are; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.’


He told them, ‘This is what the Lord has said: “Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath  to the Lord. Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil, and set aside everything left over to be kept until morning.” ’


So the people rested on the seventh day.
