But I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, yet he will not see it,  and he will die there.


However, the Chaldean army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They arrested him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon’s king, at Riblah in the land of Hamath. The king passed sentence on him there.


Abishai son of Zeruiah asked, ‘Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed? ’

He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. He did all these things even though he gave his hand in pledge.  He will not escape!

‘You must not go! ’  the people pleaded. ‘If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth  ten thousand of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.’


What you have done is not good. As the Lord lives, all of you deserve to die  since you didn’t protect your lord, the Lord’s anointed.  Now look around; where are the king’s spear and water jug that were by his head? ’


But David said to Abishai, ‘Don’t destroy him, for who can lift a hand against the Lord’s anointed and be innocent? ’


You can see with your own eyes that the Lord handed you over to me today in the cave.  Someone advised me to kill you,  but I  , took pity on you and said: I won’t lift my hand against my lord, since he is the Lord’s anointed.


He said to his men, ‘As the Lord is my witness, I would never do such a thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed.  I will never lift my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.’


When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab  and said, ‘Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before him.’


He said to them, ‘The Lord is a witness against you, and his anointed is a witness today that you haven’t found anything  in my hand.’ ‘He is a witness,’ they said.


Here I am. Bring charges against me before the Lord and his anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken?  Who have I wronged or mistreated? Who gave me a bribe to overlook something?  , I will return it to you.’

Jeremiah chanted a dirge  over Josiah, and all the male and female singers still speak of Josiah in their dirges today. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Dirges.


The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him.


Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit was abundant, and on it was food for all. Wild animals found shelter under it, the birds of the sky  lived in its branches, and every creature was fed from it.


The bramble said to the trees, ‘If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. But if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’


Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the rain, like flowing streams  in a dry land and the shade of a massive rock in an arid land.


They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies  , they had lived in its shade among the nations.


Where now is your king,  , that he may save you in all your cities, and the  rulers  , you demanded, saying, ‘Give me a king and leaders’?
