He told them, ‘Follow me, because the Lord has handed over your enemies, the Moabites, to you.’ So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.


Then the Israelites heard it said, ‘Look, the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh have built an altar on the frontier of the land of Canaan at the region of  the Jordan, on the Israelite side.’

they told him, ‘Please say Shibboleth.’ If he said, ‘Sibboleth,’ because he could not pronounce it correctly, they seized him and executed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time forty-two thousand from Ephraim died.


There was a young man, a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, who was staying within the clan of Judah.


There was a man from Ramathaim-zophim  in  the hill country of Ephraim.  His name was Elkanah  son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.


Now Solomon’s servant,  Jeroboam son of Nebat, was an Ephraimite from Zeredah. His widowed mother’s name was Zeruah. Jeroboam rebelled  against Solomon,
